Principal Dunn Update - April 7, 2024
Posted on 04/07/2024
César Chávez Elementary,

We are in the last stretch of the school year! A busy month filled with schoolwide events such as our April 10th Open House, April 14th Bike Swap, including many 1st-6th grade spring field trips in the coming weeks. Our staff and I realize how quickly time passes after Spring break, only having nine more weeks to go before your student promotes to the next grade level.

Our school’s goal now is to enjoy every moment with your child and continue focusing on reinforcing their Spanish learning and skill foundation to mitigate the “summer slide”, an educational phenomenon, though naturally experienced in a Spanish Immersion program when there may be minimal exposure or practice in your student’s Spanish language development. So even if your child does not receive a DJUSD summer school invitation next week, do not worry. The staff and I will be posting Spanish learning ideas and resources your child can work on over the summer independently and, or with home-caregiver support on our website next month.

Until then, our staff appreciates your important help in encouraging your student in these next few months in demonstrating regular school day attendance, establishing consistent reading habits in Spanish (at least 20-minutes after school) to build fluency, and increasing their positive academic behaviors and efforts during class times with their teachers and classmates. These added efforts now will truly make a positive difference in your student’s academic and social-emotional “readiness” for the following grade-level next school year!

We look forward to finishing the school year strong!

In partnership,

Sra. Dunn
