CCE Community,
Our school is proudly participating in The Great Kindness Challenge (GKC), a week-long program dedicated to creating a culture of kindness and compassion in communities worldwide. To help our students practice kindness and put their compassion into action, they will receive a GKC checklist. [Insert Here] We will encourage all students to complete as many acts of kindness as possible at school and hope they feel inspired to continue them at home! Together, we will lift each other up, cheer each other on, and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!
In addition, we will have spirit days for this special week, Mon., January 22-Fri., January 26:
Monday/January 22: Wild about kindness-animal print/bring a stuffed animal to school
Tuesday/January 23: Team up for kindness-sports gear
Wednesday/January 24: Shine bright with kindness-bright/neon colors
Thursday/January 25: It’s your job to be kind-dress up as a career you’d like in the future
Friday/January 26: Dreaming of kindness-pajamas
Kind regards,
Sra. Dunn

Updates
CCE families, please read the updates below, the teachers, staff, and I need your help!
Avoid Trading or Sharing Foods with Peers at Snack or Lunch at School
DJUSD and CCE are committed to the safety of our students. In order to reduce the risk that children with food allergies will have an allergy-related event at school, the following guidelines have been assembled. DJUSD and CCE cannot guarantee that a student will never experience an allergy-related event while at school. Nonetheless, we are diligent in the prevention, care, and management of food allergies and reactions. Please read a few of the following points below and/or you may access our DJUSD Guide for Supporting Children with Life-Threatening Food Allergies for more detailed information.
- Avoid trading or sharing foods with peers.
- Wash hands before and after eating.
- Learn to recognize symptoms of an allergic reaction and notify an adult immediately if a reaction is suspected.
Promptly inform an adult as soon as accidental exposure occurs or symptoms appear.
- Do not eat anything with unknown ingredients or ingredients known to contain an allergen (as age-appropriate).
- Eat only foods brought from home and/or parent-approved cafeteria menu items.
Cell Phone/Smart Watch Use at School
Students are contacting caregivers during the school day using their personal cell phone or smart watch without permission from teacher or school staff. If your child is feeling unwell at school, the protocol for students is to report to their teacher immediately to visit the school nurse in the office. The school nurse will assess your child’s ailments or symptoms and will directly contact you by phone if your child needs to be picked up or will allow your child to call you directly from our school land line.
Please review the following guidelines regarding cell phone and smart watch use during the school day at CCE with your K-6th grade student.
- CCE students are not allowed to call or text their parents and/or guardian using either a personal cell phone, and/or smart watch during the school day between 8:25 a.m. – 2:30p.m. / 3:00p.m.
- These electronics must be shut off by parent controls, or turned on “silent” and stored in backpacks at arrival or 8:25 a.m.
- Students may only contact parents/guardians via the CCE office phone by request during the school day.
If a student is observed by a staff member using their personal cell phone or smart watch to call, text, record videos, or take pictures without CCE staff permission during the school day: 1) first warning issued and email sent home to parent, 2) personal cell phone/smart watch will be confiscated and held in the office for parent to pick up, 3) principal meeting with parent/guardian and student.

Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Enrollment
Kindergarten registration is just around the corner, Monday, February 26, 2024! Younger siblings of CCE enrolled students, and any student eligible to attend DJUSD may register in our Kindergarten Spanish Language Immersion Program, regardless of language background. Students of varying abilities and needs contribute to the diversity of the community.
Parents should understand that becoming bilingual (exhibiting cognitive, academic, and linguistic benefits of immersion) takes approximately seven years in an intense learning environment. It is therefore desirable for students to participate through at least the sixth grade.
