Principal Dunn Update, April 11, 2021
Posted on 04/11/2021

César Chávez Elementary,

I like to acknowledge and thank the CCE Staff and Parents for diligently preparing for a safe and welcoming return to school.  While I expect our students will be eager to see their friends and teacher tomorrow, we anticipate there will be a mix of emotions they will experience, too.  On our CCE Website you will find our Transitioning to In-person Learning article with resources.  Here were a few takeaways I thought were helpful from this website:

  1. it is important to remain calm, help validate your child’s feelings, and remind them that we are all affected by this change and are going to get through it together.
  2. Our children are asking many questions that you may not know the answer to, but it is still okay to say, “That’s a good question. I don’t know the answer, but I will try to find out.”  Kids appreciate knowing that you are managing the situation and doing what you can to alleviate their concerns.
  3. Set up some routines that help support familiarity and predictability.
  4. Talk with your child about a strategy or coping skill they can use when they feel nervous or worried at school.

We are a school community that CARES, and we will continue to help and reinforce the Sí se puede spirit that connects us all.

With reassurance,

Sra. Dunn

Important Information

I highly encourage our CCE families to view the DJUSD health and safety training modules on this site now.  Families will also need to review this document (English) (Spanish) in its entirety with their child.  When you have completed the Module Training, please return the Informed Consent form to our school office no later than the first day of in-person instruction.  One form is needed for each student enrolled at CCE.  Families/Caregivers may submit this form electronically to Lynn Alvarez ( and Cc to Veronica Dunn (  Our school office hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., where hard copies of these forms are available or to drop off the signed consent form for your student/s.

Welcome Back Activities

Thanks to all the CCE families who are arranging and supporting welcome back activities this week for our students and staff!  Our SIPAT Executive Board was hard at work all weekend prepping and sorting items for our students and teachers this weekend.  We want to thank all SIPAT members who provide us with snacks, lunches, meals, and supplies.  We are so grateful for your dedicated time and efforts in the most thoughtful way.

Kindergarten, 1st Grade and New Student Tours

Our in-person tours were highly attended, and our students had a chance to visit their classrooms and learn more about the new spaces they will be sharing with their peers and teacher.  Thank you, caregivers, for bringing your student back to school for a brief preview which we hope will be a calm transition for them.

We’ve Got Stumps!

Our outdoor learning spaces are looking spectacular due to the collective efforts of our Environmental Education Program Members and Families who located trunks, sliced, and delivered stumps to all four of our outdoor learning spaces.  Students will now have socially distanced seating, surrounded by our natural school landscapes and gardens.  A special “howl-out” to Juliette Beck, Jord Nelsen, Amber Husten and Robin Erbacher for coordinating such a broad, community effort to support our CCE Environmental Education Program!

CCE Return to Campus Handbook is Now Available

Please keep your CCE Family Handbook in an accessible manner throughout the remainder of the school year.  Keep in mind new information and updates will be prevalent throughout the school year and some of the content in the Handbook may not apply from one Phase or Tier to the next. You can access a digital copy here or on our CCE website Otherwise, request a hardcopy or Spanish version from our office staff for pick up within five business days.

CCE In-Person/Distance Learning Request Form

Only complete this Google Form if you are interested in switching from Distance Learning into In-Person Learning at César Chávez Elementary, or switching from In-Person Learning into Distance Learning.  In-person instruction placement requests will be reviewed by sites each Thursday in the order they are received.  Families will be consulted and/or notified of in-person activation on Fridays.  Please note that transition to in-person instruction relies upon class flexibility.  Distance Learning requests will be consulted by parent in collaboration with school staff to support transition and family flexibility.
