Dear CCE,
Hopefully we have all changed our clocks 1-hour forward today! Spring is near, and we realize many families may be traveling before, during and after Spring Break and we wish you healthy and safe travels. DJUSD will be providing Covid-19 home antigen test kits to every student, and your child’s homeroom teacher will be passing one kit to each student on Wednesday, March 15.
This week, Monday, March 13 - Friday, March 17, César Chávez Elementary will hold our Spring Safety Week. Over the course of the week, students and staff will participate in a series of emergency drills to practice procedures that we would use in an actual urgent situation. We respectfully ask our parent volunteers who happen to be on campus during our drills to participate with students and staff. You may refer to our DJUSD website to access the Emergency Information Sheet for Families. Here are the dates when CCE has scheduled our drills:
Monday, March 13: Lockdown Drill: Ordered when there is a potential threat on campus, disorderly conduct, or when there is police activity in the area, students and staff will locate to the nearest room. Teachers will lock doors and close the blinds.
Tuesday, March 14: Earthquake Drill: Ordered when there is an earthquake or a tornado approaching. Students should get under/desk/table and away from anything that could fall over.
Wednesday, March 15: Fire Drill: Ordered when there is a fire, gas leak, etc. After the fire alarm sounds, students will exit the building to a designated evacuation site.
Thursday, March 16: Shelter In Place Drill: Ordered when there is an issue on or off campus or a non-threat on campus, for example swarm of bees, or a loose dog on campus. Teachers have lock blocks on classroom doors but business will continue on as usual in the classrooms.
Friday, March 17: Teacher Down Drill: Ordered when a teacher is down or there is a situation in the classroom and first responders arrive on campus to attend to the situation. Students stay in the classroom but continue business as usual while support staff assist.
Teachers will prepare and work with the students in advance before each safety drill to ensure our students and staff on campus are safe. If parents need to dismiss their child off campus on either of these dates, please sign them out at the office before 10:30 a.m. and, or after 11:00 a.m.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Veronica L Dunn, Principal

Obsolete textbooks, classroom materials, and consumables are currently being sorted by teachers. Per district policy we will hold an obsolete/surplus materials event to give families the opportunity to take these materials home to use as extra home resources.
