Dear César Chávez Elementary Families,

My hope is that you receive this message in good health and spirit as I know many of you are preparing for the start of the 2020-21 DJUSD school year in Distance Learning. By August 3, the staff and I will have more opportunities to engage in meetings and trainings supported by DJUSD so that we can prepare and welcome our students and families Back to School remotely on August 26 and immediately begin fostering our CARES, Social Emotional Learning activities, academic routines and schedules. Presently, there is some information I can share with you here and more will be forthcoming specific to César Chávez in the coming weeks.

Thank you for taking the time to read below. I appreciate your kindness and support as together we navigate these challenging times. This week, I will be following up with emails and phone calls, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am available this summer and will do my best to promptly answer any present questions or concerns you have.

Responsive Classroom

The week of June 15, CCE Teachers and Specialists participated in a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) 4-day training with Responsive Classroom. Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based way of teaching that offers practical strategies for bringing together social-emotional and academic learning throughout the school day. Thanks to SIPAT and families who took part in the Night of Heroes Give for Kids SIPAT Auction on March 9, 2019. Because of your contributions, our school and teachers now have Responsive Classroom Curriculum and resources to develop skills in four areas of teaching: Offering engaging academics, building a positive community, effectively managing the classroom, matching instruction to students’ developmental strengths and needs.
In June, CCE staff set the following Responsive Classroom Goals for our First Six Weeks:

  1. Create a climate of warmth, inclusion and safety.
  2. Teach classroom routines and behavior expectations.
  3. Help students get to know and care for each other and school environment.
  4. Establish expectations for academic work.

Important Updates

Superintendent’s Message

You may find Dr. Bowes, DJUSD Superintendent, Friday, July 24 message here. You can also review the July 23 Board Meeting presentation slides and full meeting video recording on our DJUSD Restart website.

August 6: DJUSD Online Re-enrollment

DJUSD Online Re-enrollment will open on August 6th. It is important for every new and returning family to complete the Online Re-enrollment process which gives us updated addresses, emergency contact information, etc. This school year, we will be mailing home important information, report cards and in some cases learning materials so it will be even more important for you to keep this information updated throughout the school year.

Classroom Assignments for Fall 2020

CCE staff completed classroom lists this past May. Assigning DJUSD elementary students to fall classrooms is a formal process that is performed and completed in the Spring. The process involved working with our teams of grade-level teachers, specialists and staff who collaborated to build balance class groupings where a variety of factors were considered to create class lists. As parents begin planning for Distance Learning in the fall it is important to know our policy, as it is for most schools in Davis, which is to not accept or promise to honor requests for specific teachers or peer pairings. Class lists undergo extensive review in an effort to produce the best outcomes for all students. When placements are announced, your cooperation and support of this process provides the best possible outcome for students and staff.

  • The Online Re-enrollment process must be completed in order to receive your child’s teacher assignment for Fall 2020.
  • This year we will not hold our traditional “paperless parade” due to Covid-19 restrictions.
  • Classroom assignments will be emailed to parents/guardians in August in coordination with all DJUSD elementary sites (notification TBD).
  • We will be working with our staff to make the grade level classes be more aligned in curriculum, format and expectations to support families if they choose to work together in learning pods.
