Black History& CounselingDear CCE Families,

Celebrating History and Contributions

How quickly the first month of 2020 has passed, and now the Winter Season is presenting with a milder climate…visions of tree buds and bulbs are just around the corner! In February, CCE will be acknowledging National African American History Month and National School Counselor Week this week, February 3-7! Sra. Flores, is in her 2nd year at our school and our students and staff will be honoing her caring and positive contibutions, as well as recognizing the Prevention and Wellness Managers, and the DJUSD K-12 Comprehensive School Counseling Team with cards and gifts of gratitude.

Attendance Matters in February

The month of February at CCE presents with higher volumes of student absences due to illness, as well as Short-Term Independent Studies (STIS). Therefore, we ask families to help out by contacting our front office staff and teachers each day your child will not be present at school due to illness or other reasons. In addition, our office staff and teachers respectfully ask that you provide us at least two weeks or more in advance when initiating the STIS Request form to provide the teachers ample time to create and organize materials for your child during their STIS. You may pick up a STIS form in the front office and you may access more DJUSD Attendance Initiative information on our district website.

Wishing you all well this month!

Sra. Dunn

Neuroscience at CCE

On Friday, January 24th, 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms were fortunate to attend a presentation in the MPR given by CCE parent, Dr Veronica Martinez-Cerdeno, and received a visit from The Ventricular Foundation. The Ventricular foundation promotes scientific outreach using neuroscience as a teaching tool. After a brief presentation about brain function and brain health, students rotated through four activity and experimental stations. Students were encouraged to ask questions throughout the visit. As an added bonus, the entire outreach visit was conducted in Spanish to further integrate and support the immersion instruction offered by César Chávez Elementary.
UCDavis Mind Institute

Teacher Professional Development about ADHD

Last Wednesday, January 29, Dr. Faye Dixon and Dr. Samantha Blair from the UC Davis Mind Institute, provided a staff workshop titled, “ADHD and Considerations for School Staff”. The three objectives for the workshop were: 1) Understand ADHD symptoms, 2) Identify how ADHD impacts students’ experiences, 3) Apply class-wide strategies. Dr. Dixon and Dr. Blair provided our staff with wonderful resources, and both will be back at CCE to offer a Parent Engagement Night Workshop for CCE Families at the end of March (more details to come). UC Davis Mind Institute flyers are available at the CCE Front Office or you may access their website for more information.
